Why sewage is Category 3 (black) water
Under the IICRC S500 standard, water losses are classified by contamination level: Category 1 (clean, from a sanitary source), Category 2 (gray, some contamination), Category 3 (black, grossly contaminated). Sewage from a main-line backup, a city-sewer surcharge, or a toilet backup is always Category 3. The standard calls for removal — not drying in place — of carpet, pad, saturated drywall, insulation, particleboard, and baseboard that was in contact with Category 3 water.
Common Salem sewage scenarios
Salem’s mix of older farmhouses and newer subdivisions produces different sewage scenarios. Older farmhouses often have long private sewer runs to the city main that cross agricultural land with mature trees; these see heavy root infiltration. Agricultural runoff during spring can overload the city sewer locally. Newer Salem homes see fewer backups but still get them during peak-rainfall events.

Insurance for Salem sewage work
Standard Utah homeowners policies exclude sewer backup unless you have the sewer backup endorsement — it is a cheap add-on (typically $40 to $150 per year with a $5,000 to $25,000 limit) but it is often missing. We check your coverage before scoping and tell you up front what we think the carrier will and will not cover. We scope in Xactimate and bill the carrier directly.
