Sewage Cleanup Cost in Spanish Fork, Utah

Reviewed by Tyler Bennett, Restoration Project Manager, IICRC WRT/ASD #291438, October 2026.

Short answer: Sewage cleanup is priced as Category 3 water damage under the IICRC S500 standard. 4Sure’s typical water mitigation jobs run $3,500 to $8,500, and reconstruction, when it is needed, typically runs $4,500 to $9,500. Sewage jobs cost more per square foot than clean-water jobs because contaminated porous materials are removed rather than dried. The estimate is free and written before work beyond emergency stabilization begins.

Sewer backup endorsement: standard Utah homeowners policies exclude sewer backup unless you carry the specific sewer backup endorsement. Check your declarations page for “Sewer Backup” or “Water Backup” coverage with a dollar limit. It is the most common reason sewage claims get denied.

How a sewage job is priced

We do not publish a sewage price table, because the same backup can be a one-room job or a whole-basement job depending on where the water went and how long it sat. What we can stand behind:

  • Mitigation (extraction, removal of contaminated materials, cleaning, antimicrobial treatment, drying with daily moisture readings): typically $3,500 to $8,500.
  • Reconstruction (drywall, insulation, flooring, baseboard, trim, paint): typically $4,500 to $9,500.
  • Category and class. Our water damage cost page shows how price moves with IICRC water category (1, 2, 3) and class (1–4). Sewage is always Category 3.

The factors that scale sewage cleanup pricing

  1. Affected square footage. More contaminated area means more containment, more removal and more drying equipment.
  2. Porous material volume. Under IICRC S500, carpet, pad, saturated drywall, insulation, baseboard and particleboard that touched Category 3 water are removed and disposed of. More removal costs more.
  3. HVAC involvement. If sewage reached floor registers, ductwork or the air handler, the system has to be inspected and cleaned.
  4. How long it sat. The longer sewage sits, the further it wicks into walls and subfloor, and the more has to come out.
  5. Reconstruction scope. Finish level and square footage drive the rebuild cost.

What the free estimate includes

  • On-site visit by an IICRC-certified technician
  • Moisture readings and thermal imaging to find moisture beyond the visible backup
  • Water category assessment under IICRC S500
  • Written scope and estimate before work beyond emergency stabilization begins
  • Insurance coverage review and billing guidance

Insurance realities for sewage claims

Standard Utah homeowners policies cover sudden sewer backup only if you have the sewer backup endorsement. Endorsements usually carry their own dollar limit, and sometimes their own deductible. Coverage typically includes the structure and some personal property.

When a job exceeds the endorsement limit, we show you the uncovered portion up front so you can decide. On covered work we bill the carrier directly; you pay the deductible plus anything the policy does not cover. Wisetack financing is available for the uncovered portion: $500 to $25,000, 3 to 24 months, soft credit check. See how we handle insurance and financing.

Why sewage costs more than clean-water damage

  • PPE and safety. Full suits, respirators, boot covers and sealed waste disposal are used on every sewage job.
  • Containment. HEPA-filtered negative air and containment are standard on Category 3 work.
  • Removal instead of drying. Porous materials that touched sewage cannot be saved, which means more demolition, disposal and rebuilding than a comparable clean-water job.

What you can do to keep the cost down

  • Call fast. Every hour sewage sits, it wicks further into drywall, baseboard and subfloor, and more material has to come out.
  • Stop using water. No flushing, showers, laundry or dishwasher until the line is cleared, so you do not add to the backup.
  • Stay out of the water. Category 3 water carries bacteria and viruses. Keep kids and pets away, and do not try to mop it up.
  • Photograph everything before anything is moved. It helps the insurance claim.
  • Find your declarations page. Knowing whether you have the sewer backup endorsement, and its limit, lets us tell you what is covered on the first visit.
