Sewer Camera Inspection: What It Shows and When You Need One

Reviewed by Tyler Bennett, Restoration Project Manager, IICRC WRT/ASD #291438, October 2026.

Short answer: A sewer camera inspection runs a waterproof camera through your sewer line to show what is inside: roots, grease, wipes, low spots where waste collects, cracks, offset joints and broken or collapsed sections. It turns a guess into a clear picture, so you know whether the line needs clearing or repair before you pay for either.

What the camera can show

  • Roots entering at joints or cracks
  • Grease and sludge narrowing the pipe
  • Foreign objects like wipes, toys or construction debris
  • Bellies (sags) where waste and water sit
  • Cracks, offset joints and broken sections
  • Collapsed pipe blocking flow entirely

When to book one

  • After a sewer backup, before deciding on clearing or repair
  • When clogs keep coming back
  • Before buying an older home
  • If you have mature trees near the sewer line
  • Before a remodel that adds bathrooms or fixtures

What happens during the inspection

  1. We locate a cleanout or other access point.
  2. The camera is fed through the line while we watch the live picture.
  3. We note what we see and roughly where along the line it is.
  4. You get our findings and a free written estimate for any clearing or repair.

From inspection to fix

Because 4Sure does snaking, hydro-jetting and repair of damaged sections, the inspection leads straight to the fix with one company. If a backup already reached the house, the same crew handles the Category 3 cleanup under IICRC S500 and the rebuild. See sewer line clearing & repair.

Questions to ask about your inspection

  • What exactly did the camera find, and where along the line?
  • Is the problem a blockage that clearing will fix, or damage to the pipe?
  • If roots are present, are they entering through a crack or a joint?
  • Is any section sagging, offset or broken?
  • What do you recommend, and what does the written estimate include?

Why the inspection matters for insurance

If a backup damaged your home, the cause matters to your carrier. A recorded inspection showing roots, a break or a city-side problem helps document what happened. Many policies treat the pipe repair and the resulting damage differently, and sewage damage is often covered only with a sewer backup endorsement, so we review your policy with you before work starts.

Common questions

How long does a sewer camera inspection take?

Usually less than an hour for a typical residential line, depending on access and length.

Do I need a cleanout for a camera inspection?

A cleanout makes access easiest. If there is no accessible cleanout, we look at other access points during the visit.

Should I get a camera inspection before buying a home?

It is worth considering for older homes, homes with mature trees near the line, or any home where the seller mentions past backups.

What happens if the camera finds damage?

You get a free written estimate for clearing or repairing the line before any work starts. 4Sure clears and repairs sewer lines, so the same company can do the fix.
